Welcome to

THE OTTAWA RIVER RUNNERS

Les Coureurs de la Rivière des Outaouais

2007 Team Trials, Charlotte, NC
by Tim Cutts

As indicated by the results, the combination of this difficult world class course, and the course settings on the three days yielded some frustrating penalties for many.  The Friday's course set by Michal was probably the best chance for participants to make good times, but nervousness, touches, and a tricky gate 18 in the swirling eddy at the bottom of the last drop killed many competitors hopes.  The Saturday course raised the technical challenge a bit more and a higher number of 50's resulted. The Sunday setup by Cathy Hearn featured a tricky upstream at gate 4 beside a high speed rooster tail, followed by offsets and a flush gate in the high speed current & eddies along one wall.  It also included a tricky upstream at the final corner before it goes down a drop to a boily finish series of gates.  Sunday was certainly not an easy last chance, however that was the case for John Hastings as he nailed it to make the team.

Fellow ORR paddler Jamie Cartwright had good results the whole weekend, beating young American competitor Ben Fraker on day 2 and 3.  Junior Spencer Pomeroy made senior team as well on day 2 in C1.

The C2 pairing of Tom Hewitt and Mike Holroyd were successful in making senior team on day 2.  The three courses were not easy on C2's.  Two American boats were DNF on day 3, with the top US team not racing on day 3 as they already had qualified and were nursing injuries.  Of 3 Canadian boats racing over 3 days, there were only 2 back to back runs where the teams did not get a 50.

In woman's kayak, Sarah Potvin-Bernal was successful making team, on a course that proved a challenge to make percentage against K1M pacesetters David Ford and Americans Scott Parsons, Jim Wade, Brett Heyl and Scott Mann.

Michael Taylor and Jiri Jr. made quite an impression in their runs, finishing well against other older racers.

The Charlotte course and facility(wall climbing, rafting, mountain biking) was impressive and a great opportunity for high level training by all participants.  Good sized crowds, particularly on Sunday under a warm sun and blue skies, cheered all competitors on.

One lasting impression was that we certainly have a challenge to break what appears to be an American K1M field that has huge depth and will only get better with such great facilities at hand.  If only we had Star Trek transporters insteady of a 15 hour drive!
