24th, Mar 31st
(11 sessions) with slalom gates and boat storage available.
Sessions are
open to both ORR and non-ORR members. This is a great
opportunity to
introduce friends to kayaking in the warm pool waters.
Costs are:
$100 for 11 sessions
$60 for 5-pack
$15 for single sessions
Session packs may be shared among family members.
the pool sessions registration form.
There will be a set of kids sessions coached by Jen Gratto:
"Kayaking for Kids! Come on out to Carleton Pool with the
Ottawa River
Runners to learn and practice whitewater kayaking skills;
through fun drills
and games, in a warm and comfortable pool. Feb 3, 17, 24,
and March 3,
7-8PM. Ages 7-10years." These sessions are for both novice
and early
experienced kayakers, and equipment is available. Those
interested can elect
for some or all sessions. Cost is $12 per session plus pool
time costs as
listed above. (i.e. approximately $100 in total if you want
all 4 sessions)
Jen will also provide a 4-hour Introductory Learn to Kayak
adult course from
8-9PM on the same evenings. This might be of particular
interest to parents
of the children taking the above course. Those interested
need to register
for the package of 4 evenings. Cost is $45 plus pool time
costs as listed
above. (i.e. approximately $100 in total if you want all 4
sessions)
Other courses, and instruction currently being organized
(details
forthcoming) are:
*
Intro Kids Course for the January session. This would be
targeted
at total novices.
*
Rolling clinics
*
Masters Slalom Coaching
All pool sessions are intended for either slalom or plastic
boats, and since
we will be combining courses and open sessions, there will
be a restricted
number of boats.
If you elect to take single sessions, we would ask that you
please pre-pay
for at least one session. Subsequent sessions may then be
paid on a drop-in
basis but advanced notice of a few days is advised.
Please email me with your choice of session-packs, and
interest level in all
instruction and coaching options listed above, by Sunday Dec
17th. You
should do this even if you previously responded to the
earlier pool session
emails. Registration forms and fees are due by Wed Dec 20th.
Finally, please also indicate if you require equipment
(boat, paddle, PFD,
skirt, etc) in your email and I will reply back with
availability.
Regards, ...Roger

Slalom Team Trials
On behalf of
Whitewater Ontario, I am pleased to announce the 2006
Provincial Junior Slalom Team based on the results of
the Team Trials race held at the Elora Gorge this past
weekend (see attached). Congratulations to all the O.R.R.
competitors and special thanks to the volunteers and
parents who helped in the successful staging of this
race. Ontario Junior coach, Laura Boudens did a fine job
with all the paddlers some of whom were racing for the
first time. The contribution of the athletes in both
putting up and taking down the gates was greatly
appreciated by the race organizers. Also thanks go out
to Stig Larsson and Tyler Lawlor at Level Six for
supporting our developing athletes and the slalom
program.

News from Whitewater Ontario
The
Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion recently
announced the Quest for Gold Ontario Athlete
Assistance Program. This program will support
athletes by providing funding for Ontario athletes.
All athletes from Ontario funded through Sport
Canada's AAP and continuing to meet AAP eligibility
requirements will automatically qualify for Canada
Card status under the OAAP.
The
program will also provide Ontario cards for athletes
selected by the Provincial Sport Organization (PSO).
Canoe Ontario is the PSO that is affiliated with
Whitewater Ontario. Canoe Ontario received ten male
and ten female cards. From this twenty card
allotment, Whitewater Ontario received four cards.
Ontario card candidates were selected using the
gender equity rules of the program and athlete
standing in the national rankings. This is
consistent with Whitewater Ontario's existing
Ontario card selection process.
The
successful candidates are:
-
Celeste Corkery
-
Adam
Cutts
-
Jamie Cutts
-
Spencer Pomeroy
Athletes
who have not been nominated and who wish to appeal
this decision can do so by filing an appeal in
writing only with the Quest for Gold Ontario Athlete
Assistance Program Appeals Committee. Grounds for
appeals will be limited strictly to issues related
to whether or not Canoe Ontario (Whitewater Ontario
in the case of the athletes listed above) completed
the selection process in accordance with their own
published selection criteria and related procedures.
If it is
determined by the Appeals Committee that a PSO/ MSO
did not apply its criteria/ procedures/ process
correctly in the selection of athletes the Ministry
will direct the PSO/ MSO to redo the selection
process using the correct criteria/process.
The
deadline for athletes to submit appeals to the
Appeals Committee is March 14, 2006. Appeals can be
directed to:

Both Days: Qualifications
US Team
Trials at Dickerson by Tim Cutts
A great showing from the
Canadian contingent at this US team qualifier race -
approximately one third of the participants were from ORR.
Eight of nineteen medal positions were occupied by club
members - and there should have been 9 but we won't talk
about that! Many paddlers persevered a dismal ride down
amidst buckets of rain and transport spray to enjoy a
beautiful 3 days of 20+ temperatures. It was interesting to
see how many people improved from practice to put it all
together - come race day. As a first time visitor to the
site I was impressed with the facility and size of the
water, although I am told that it was low compared to
February and March. Michal remained behind with some of the
paddlers for a training camp while the rest of us made our
way home. Unfortunately the Moxley's van made it only part
way, and had to remain in Binghamton for repairs while the
passengers made their way home via rental vehicle the next
day. The cost of parent-provided buses I guess...at least
it was on the return trip.
(Credit for the picture of Jamie
& Adam should go to Spencer Pomeroy who precariously walked
the sloped concrete walls while I safely stayed in the
judging platforms!)
