2012 Annual ORR Cookie Race

Posted on Sunday, September 30, 2012

It seems we picked the perfect window in a rainy day to be paddling. Though it was chilly and there were some occasional showers, the annual Cookie Race went on as planned, and was a lot of fun. There were 18 participants who raced in K1, C1, K2, C2, and SUP. A table full of cookies was provided by the participants and attendees, and there was hot chocolate to warm us up as well (thanks Sherri and Jim!) Coach Tom Murrie set a 9 gate course for us, and even strung up a new wire in the process, so the flatwater course was looking good.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who showed up to help run things. We had Jim Smedley at the start, Doug Corkery running the timing, Celeste Corkery and Cameron Smedley judging, and Tom Murrie providing safety. The cheering section was fantastic at encouraging all the racers. I am always glad to see more hands willing than jobs to do.

Looking forward to next year already!

Race Information

When: Sunday September 30th, race meeting is at 11:30 am, the race starts at 12:00 pm

(come earlier if you would like to practice ahead of time)

Where: The Pumphouse - at the flatwater gates (see map, free parking in the bottom lot)

What: The Cookie Race is the ORR's annual beginner-level for fun slalom race. We set a slalom course on the flatwater gates, explain how to do it, and have fun! The race is open to all slalom beginners who are club members or summer camp participants. Bring your own equipment or use ours. The entry fee is cookies (any kind, any amount), and besides that you just need to bring swim clothing, warm clothing, and be ready to paddle. If you are an expert at all things slalom, please come paddle a C2 or K2 with one of the beginners, or help us run the race! If you have paddling experience, but have never tried slalom, this is your chance! The racing is purely a for-fun event (an excuse to get on the water and try something new), so don't hesitate to come check it out and paddle if you want to. All ages are welcome. If you have any questions, please send me an e-mail.
